In the center of Amsterdam in the area known as the Red Light District or De Wallen, you can find The Kinky Suite. This very busy area, where there is plenty to do day and night, is one of the biggest sights of Amsterdam.
It is often difficult for foreigners to imagine that window prostitution is allowed in the Netherlands. For that reason a walk through the Red Light District is a must for most visitors. The name “De Wallen” refers to the old ramparts around Amsterdam.
In addition to the window prostitutes, you will find sex theaters, a cannabis museum and many coffee shops in the Red Light District where soft drugs are legally sold. But there is much more to see in the Red Light District.
Right in front of the Oude Kerk on Oudekerksplein is the bronze statue ‘Belle’ made by the artist Els Rijerse. It is a tribute to prostitutes worldwide. It was an initiative of ex-prostitute Mariska Majoor, who is also the driving force behind the Prostitution Information Center. This PIC provides information about prostitution and organizes walks through the neighbourhood, led by experts, i.e. (ex-)prostitutes.
